Ken Rockwell talks with Marc Silber about photography tips that often are not covered in photography school. Ken explains how strong photo composition is essential for creating an award-winning photo that grabs people’s attention. In this video, he touches on the different aspects of photography composition, such as lighting, color, composition, and depth creation. While the subject of a photograph is significant, every photo needs a basic structure upon which extra details and touches are added.

I thnk this guy takes terrible photos.

  2. Dreadfultime January 8th, 2012

that photo he’s showing its pretty nice. i would see it in a calendar, but still pretty nice. the rest of the photos on his website… well, that’s a whole different story.

  3. ApertureTH January 8th, 2012

This guy takes somewhat decent pictures but his website is a joke and you should not take it seriously. In fact, he even admitted it’s a joke.

  4. VanyahaHeights January 11th, 2012

What’s amazing about that Mono Lake photo is it looks very photoshopped but it’s purely Rockwell’s eye, creativity & problem solving that got that. Sad that many people with $5000 cameras can’t take pics with crap. Do have to agree his website is more novelty & comedy than accurate tips. Awesome guy. :)

    no good

  6. zenoist2 February 17th, 2012

I look at his info on the internet about various cameras. His main point seems to be you dont need a good (read expensive)camera to take good photos. The humble olympus trip 35 did well,it is a good camera though.

  7. 1100010000 March 19th, 2012

he is no real artist. rockwell is just one of those many collectors of meaningless camera gear and little internet awards who talks technical nonsense he grabbed from wikipedia and little workshops.

  8. landkumuhunters April 7th, 2012

ken rockwell is a joke! look at the sample gallery (poor composition, misfocus, and retarded amounts of saturation) on his website and his ridiculously inaccurate reviews lol. One lucky shot and this guy thinks he’s god’s gift to photography lmao! I think he uses iphoto to process his images…

  9. Dragon4eva May 1st, 2012

    conceited git

  10. SydneyTheFox May 6th, 2012

ken rockwell is one big amateur!

  11. DrHerbz May 8th, 2012

Ken – I Love Myself – Rockwell – Gimp!Has anyone read the ‘About Me’ section on his website? He even boasts about taking his girlfriend out for a meal and paying with coupons he collected from newspapers!Ken Rockwell is a talentless gimp!I’d love to punch him in his ugly face!

  12. A1reviews May 8th, 2012

This guy needs a reality check, he loves himself, very very amateur and very misleading camera reviews, have a good laugh reading his website, thanks for the laughs…

  13. drietdorf May 9th, 2012

Yes, but he is the king of amateurs. Most people would never dream of shooting in RAW and choose a camera to based on it’s ease of use and where the buttons are located. And for those people, Ken speaks their language. If you are an experienced photographer, move along.

  14. ituajadeh May 10th, 2012

everyone seems hate this guy hahahaha

  15. visceralzen May 11th, 2012

I had no idea people thought about him like this. To a less learned amateur the shear amount of information on his site makes him look legit. In hind sight the only thing that started to give him away for me was his downplay of adjusting white balance by degrees of Kelvin, because it made no sense. I would think a pro would understand that, since white balance is pretty basic. He also advocates the importance of custom saturation (probably over saturated) settings for most of his shots.

  16. landkumuhunters May 12th, 2012

His site does give off that impression. That’s exactly what I don’t like. Less learned photographers or aspiring photographers will believe his misinformation on many things. I’m a pro wedding photographer and disagree with many of his claims in his reviews. Most recently, his review on the 5D Mark III for example. I have been using the Mark III since launch day and couldn’t believe the stupidity of his complaints when I stumbled upon his review. He’s a poser with expendable income lol

  17. bongbongxanh May 24th, 2012

despite of all the critics i still like this guy.He shares all his knowledge, and it really gives me an ensign in what’s photography is. As an emerging photographer, i learn many things from his reviews as well as his recommendations. All reviews, in some manners, are still subjective. I don’t mind much about them. If you are really into the photography, you will soon find them right or wrong. If you aren’t, don’t mind it!Even if it’s all wrong, thank god i notice them because of his review lol

  18. MegaBojan1993 June 18th, 2012

Maybe everyone hates him but I don’t. His reviews are often funny and they are written in some unique style that I like :)

  19. lolitcbls June 20th, 2012

    amazing!!

  20. taccotube June 20th, 2012

This photo is ugly purple grain shit…WTF…

  21. MaryBethable August 7th, 2012

I’ve read a lot of Rockwell’s reviews and they’re been very helpful. However, this is the first video I’ve seen of him. What a goof ball, but I think it’s great that he truly loves and gets excited about his craft.

  22. trigjeeeh September 6th, 2012

one of the most famous images of all… lol

  23. sonofthedestroyer October 27th, 2012

For all the people attacking him. Go to his website and see his photos. If you can take better pictures, by all means attack him. If you cant, then you shouldnt really be attacking him

  24. WalksWithTurkeys November 6th, 2012

Crikey, this guy is annoying. He talks so fast in a high pitched voice, and is so full of himself.

  25. mattbakerg November 23rd, 2012

He’s actually looking at his reflection in the photos glass.

  26. Tuukka Kaski December 3rd, 2012

You know he has got a point, if you’re working with a broken tool you have to know its limitations.. That’s exatly how i feel every time i visit his site for a lens review. For example everytime he says something that includes these following terms: P mode, JPG, kitlens. just replace them in your head with these: M mode, RAW, shitlens.

  27. hamsterpoop December 6th, 2012

What a fucking asshole… I wish I could pull the saturation bar on this all the way to the right…

  28. Augownage December 6th, 2012

In photo processing, you have +1,+2,+3,+4 saturation levels. Then you have ROCKWELL saturation.

  29. Uterincooperation December 6th, 2012

I really like this guy, his voice is insanely funny.

  30. HardcoreBrendan December 6th, 2012

    SATURATE THAT MOFO

  31. keeperofthecheese December 7th, 2012

    dat VANITY

  32. bernhardtsen74 December 11th, 2012

    poor glass!

  33. bostonpro2012 December 12th, 2012

    This guys is blessed

  34. Digi talkoh January 13th, 2013

What a crock of bullshit.First of all, why would anyone take a broken camera to a photo shoot.

  35. sourchocolatejuice3 January 14th, 2013

Pretty sure he reversed the picture of himself and claimed that he has some rare left-handed camera lol

  36. rolln2follow February 3rd, 2013

He does sound full of himself. However, if you don’t love your own photos and give yourself a little praise once in a while then all you will have to listen to is negative comments such as many posted here and never your own thoughts. One always looking for flaws leaves too little time for construction.LEWIS F. KORNS, Thoughts

  37. teratonexplosion February 11th, 2013

wow! such an attitude, i doubt you are any better.

  38. sam sneed February 16th, 2013

We all interpret the scenes we like in different ways. Photography is art. The negative posts on here imply that they are full of themselves as they “obviously” know more! The one aspect I like about most photographers that I meet is that they respect each ones work for what it is and are willing to share their knowledge with those who desire to know. I respect Ken for following after his own tastes – he likes vivid and overly saturated colors, he’s very up front about that – so what!

  39. MikeDay82 March 15th, 2013

“no exposure meter is perfect” ummmmm, wrong Ken.

  40. MikeDay82 March 15th, 2013

The guy has a D3x and shoots in JPEG Basic. Oh dear

  41. MrPutrifyingEagor March 21st, 2013

Funny how Ken’s Success brings out the bitterness in Loosers! Talentless? He’s a highly qualified engineer, and has more photographic knowledge in his toe Nails Clippings than you will ever have.Of course the final comment from someone who has really shown the low level of their IQ,by wanting to “Punch him in his ugly face!”-Why? he has done no harm to you at all!

  42. marque27 March 25th, 2013

    yup

  43. fdvilla April 25th, 2013

Actually he’s right, every camera has different values in exposures and give different results. This happened to me millions of times!

  44. ronfin1971 April 30th, 2013

Anyone that shoots in jpeg is lazy, and an amateur.

  45. DrHerbz May 3rd, 2013

Bitter? You couldn’t be further from the truth! It annoys me that talentless gimps can bluff their way through life. pretending that “That’s how it came off the camera”… What a load of bullshit! The majority of his photographs are so far from the originals that they’re unrecognisable. He tells people to get it right in the camera and use as little PP as possible but he’s the biggest Photoshop whore I’ve ever seen!My comment stands… he’s a talentless gimp!

  46. alancik123 May 15th, 2013

Shooting raw, and talking shit does not make you pro either.

  47. ronfin1971 May 15th, 2013

Explain how something as basic as knowing that is “talking shit”. I’m not claiming to be a pro, yet understand that the whole “I get it right in camera first” mentality is bullshit, and just a lazy explanation. JPEG shooters are lazy, and it’s irresponsible to shoot a wedding in JPEG only on the slightest off-chance you get an amazing shot, but something screwed it up when you released the shutter. smh
