Thank you, Arved, Jerome, and Marc for the comments! @Mark, I captured this with digital camera and inserted a digital frame to emulate large format style. The reason is that I love 4*5 ratio for all portraits I take and my great inspiration is Song Chao from China and the lengend, Richard Avedon. I was wondering if these digital frames look off. I mainly take pictures of people on a white background (pure white) therefore uploading online which is mostly white background doesn’t make pics look isolated.
    Thanks again to you all!

Title: 606 Young PolicemenI began photographing my fellow policemen here at Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, 606 Foreign Embassy Guard Company. We are called AP aka Auxiliary Policemen in which we serve our country under a mandatory two-year-military-duty. Some chose to be an Army, Airforce, Navy or Marine, but these men chose to be part of ROK Police Force. All men are very young; age between 18~22. We have no weekends nor no holidays.Experience as a solider/police status is quite different and tough compared to a normal civilian’s. But I value what I am going through now. When I finally ETS I would like to remember our days and ourselves that I captured in photographic forms. This is the reason I started photographing my men. I see that when we grow up, when we have kids, when we have jobs, we will look at these photos and appreciate our strength, maturity, and experience then.

I like that shot. It’s a little vigneted, and amazingly sharp in the middle. Serves the purpose real well.

Hi everyone, I found this group a few days a go. I want to push myself to become a better photographer.
Currently, I am serving in military in South Korea as an Auxiliary Policeman at 1606 Embassy Security Company of Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. As I am serving here, I found that people and life here are very unique; people from 19~21 came join the force to fullfill their mandatory military serving in Korea. I was transferred to 1606 Co. since Nov. 4th 2010 and have been serving here since then. And I have been experiencing Korean police system, culture, and life. My goal is to capture life at 1606 Co. as honest and truthful as possible. Specifcally I’ve been working on portraiture work and photojournalism work.
For technical and style aspect, I mainly produce BW images, using 5D mkii and LR3 for digital process.
Few challenges are matching color and tone on both Window and Mac. (I use Macbook and what I see here doesn’t fully match to those screens with Window OS). I like using white BG like Richard Avedon and planned to take all company policemen in this form to create an archive.
Any suggestions to make this photograph better? or any suggestions on my portfolios I am planning to produce? Frankly, I think my take on photographing Korean policemen is unique but are contents good and professional enough to publish to public?
Come look at my work on my album. I posted a few.

    Thank you so much!

Black and white suits the image nicely though for me it should include all of the bodies, there’s some of the arms/hand missing on the policemen. I really like the ”good cop/bad cop” pose the guy left looks deadly serious while his companion looks more relaxed, good work!

Hwi– great idea. I love Avedon and you have the perfect subject to record. Avedoen did a lot of interaction with his subjects, drawing out the emotions he was looking for. Try that. As you said, try to capture the real feeling of 1606. They don’t all need to be standing, it’s up to you.

Good luck and l;et us see your project as you move forward.

The images are sharp and clear. I like the way one person stern and the other is smiling.
